An Excerpt from "Learning and the Art of Producing (a whole lot of) Shitty-Ass Work"
But I work real hard and there are some things that I suck at less than other things, and people who aren’t me tend to think that I’m actually kinda good at those things. Half of that is my ridiculous tendency toward self-criticism, and the other half is just the fact that no matter how much I suck, I’ll still know more about what I’m doing than people who don’t do it all. I’m just a lot more sensitive to what “suck” actually means in the circles in which I work than people who don’t even enter the venn diagram, so of course I see glaring faults that a lot of people miss. Which is cool, really, in a sick way.
A brilliant emersonian wrote this in a longer post. I think that the people at Emerson (and many other places, but definitely at Emerson) who feel this way are the people who will ultimately go on to do outstanding things. It is this feeling that motivates us, even though it seems to frustrate us in the moment. If you don’t feel this way about whatever it is you choose to pursue in life, then you need to re-assess your passions, IMO.
